Jacob Lawrence was the most widely acclaimed African-American artist of the 20th century. In 1941, he became the first African American artist to have work featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, and in 1990, he received the U.S. National Medal of Arts. Lawrence's works are in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the Phillips Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Northwest Art.
